Virtual Summer Camps

Virtual Camps bring the thrill of Mad Science right to your house! Camps are 5 days a week, for 3 hours a day, and include direct interaction with the Mad Scientists as well as other campers. Using our in-person camps as a model, our virtual camps include instruction time, demonstrations, and time for completing at-home projects, during which time the Mad Scientist is available for questions. FAQ

What is the camper to instructor ratio?

The child to instructor ratio varies depending on enrollment. We always have at least one instructor for every 10 students.

Has Mad Science done virtual programming before?

Yes! We are partnering with our friends at Mad Science of Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill. Over the past two months, they have conducted dozens of virtual programs that featured hands-on, interactive classes with an engaging Mad Scientist and a group of their peers. Some Hampton Roads staff will be assisting with the breakout sessions.

+

Do I have to provide any materials for virtual camp?

We will provide our awesome Mad Science take-home experiments & other supplies for each camp day; you may be required to provide some basic household/grocery items. These kits will be available for curbside pickup from our office in the Greenbrier area of Chesapeake the week before camp begins, or may be delivered by mail for an additional fee.

+

Do I need to be present for the entire virtual camp session?

No! We know parents are busy, so our content is designed for the campers to work independently, just like at our in-person camps. Projects are age-appropriate in terms of physical skills required, and our Mad Scientist is there to help with the science. We certainly welcome any parents who would like to join and watch their child participate!

+

Is virtual camp just 3 hours of watching a Mad Scientist on screen?

No! Our top priority is to make sure we re-create the experience of our in-person camps. Just as we wouldn't want 3 straight hours of instruction, we wouldn't want that virtually either. We break up our session with instruction time, interaction and discussion, and lots of time for guided, independent work on physical, at-home projects.
